Water contamination and pollution, in particular by oil or hydrocarbons generally has become a major environmental issue. Source Control Systems is now able to offer cost effective solutions for removing hydrocarbons from flowing water and is able to offer effective solutions for hydrocarbon removal from stormwater runoff, in particular from airports and highways as well as removing oil contamination within marinas, boats, beaches and industrial premises. At the heart of the SCS SMART SPONGE ® range of products is a proprietary patented polymer technology developed by Abtech Industries in the United States that is unique in its ability to remove effectively, absorb and retain hydrocarbons from flowing or pooled water and, when combined with an anti-microbial agent, remove bacteria at the street level.
The Abtech SMART SPONGE ® products have been deployed throughout the United States for some years with considerable success. Working closely with Abtech Industries and a number of major UK industry specialists Source Control Systems are now able to offer effective solutions for UK markets, which essentially fall into four main sectors:
Hydrocarbon Removal from Storm-water
In order to meet emerging regulatory requirements, the need and demand for systems that successfully manage stormwater runoff and remove pollutants such as oil, is growing rapidly. A full-service system - deployed in slumps/catch basins or oil/water separators - can intercept oil and remove it in a non-leaching fashion from the stormwater flow and prevent its discharge into receiving waters. Source Control Systems offers a variety of products, providing immediate BMP solutions with maximum flexibility for removing hydrocarbons from water and other fluids that run off roads and other paved surfaces during wet weather, cleaning or through direct spills. SCS SMART SPONGE ® can be successfully deployed within most SUDS schemes, including applications such as civil and defence airports and roads.
Boating
A high percentage of boats operating within UK waters do not have a sealed bilge system and, therefore, are potentially prone to releasing contaminated hydrocarbons into our rivers, estuaries and harbours. Source Control Systems is pleased to offer a range of specialist products, developed by Abtech Industries and all containing their patented SMART SPONGE ® which are able to provide extremely cost effective methods of removing oil or hydrocarbon contaminants within boats, marinas or harbours. In addition the non-leaching properties of Smart Sponge ® provide for not only the effective removal of hydrocarbons but also the disposal of the contaminants.
Aviation
Due to the large amount of traffic, refuelling and de-icing that occurs within airports and MOD bases significant opportunities exist to keep hydrocarbon contaminants out of drains and stormwater runoff. Throughout the United States various products have been used within refuelling depots, airport stands and taxiways to virtually eliminate hydrocarbon contamination.
Industrial Wastewater
This market relates to the liquid effluent discharged by manufacturing companies in the normal course of business. Customers include utilities and manufacturers where manufacturing processes are involved as well as the normal HGV and domestic car parks.
THE SCS SMART RANGE
The versatility of SMART SPONGE ® has led to the development by Abtech Industries of a wide range of products which have been deployed within the United States for some time and which are now available within the UK through Source Control Systems. The principal products include:
SCS SMART GULLY (Known as an Ultra Urban Filter (UUF) in the States)
The SCS SMART GULLY is an innovative low-cost BMP that helps meet industry requirements with effective filtration, efficient application and moderate maintenance. The SCS SMART GULLY captures oil and grease, debris and sediment from storm-water runoff before it enters the storm drain system and is ideal for municipal, industrial and construction applications. The SCS SMART GULLY is designed for use within storm drains that experience oil and grease pollution accompanied by sediment and debris. Trash and sediment accumulate in the upper basket chamber while oil and grease is captured in the filtration media. Field tests have proven that the proprietary SMART SPONGE ® filtration media will remove an average of 95% of the oil and grease in storm-water runoff - from low concentrations typical of residential areas to high levels associated with illegal dumping of used motor oil. The oil will permanently bond within the SMART SPONGE ® and become permanently encapsulated eliminating the possibilities of leaching or leaking back into the environment.
SCS SMART BILGE
The SCS SMART BILGE is a truly unique product for the recreational and commercial boating community, engineered to get the individual boat owner involved in helping the environment by allowing them to discharge clean water from the bilge pump. The product is extremely easy to deploy, long lasting and represents an extremely cost effective way of ensuring that your boat does not disperse oil into the river. A single unit changed once a year would be suitable for most recreational boats.
SCS LINE SKIMMERS
SCS LINE SKIMMERS are ideal for creating lines of hydrocarbon protection in areas such as ponds, streams, clarifying wells, and marine fuelling stations, without inhibiting water flow. Unlike conventional solutions which are often expensive and of limited effectiveness SCS LINE SKIMMERS are not only extremely efficient at removing oil and oil films from water but their non-leaching characteristics make them a highly cost effective solution to minimising oil pollution within marinas.
SCS PASSIVE SKIMMERS
SCS PASSIVE SKIMMERS are designed to absorb and encapsulate hydrocarbons by floating directly on the water in areas such as stormwater gullies, catch basins, sumps, oil/water separators and marine fuelling stations.
